My name is Nancy Hom and I am 57 years old. I’m a 3 time cancer survivor. Approximately 17yrs of age, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and tumor. I went through years of chemotherapy during a time when it was still relatively new. Really did a number on my self-esteem as I was going to college. When I was about 44 years old, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I caught it early on and I was able to get it removed and treated! Then last year, with 56 years of age, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I went from in-operable to operable and am finishing last rounds of chemo right now.
I’ve been a donor to Shimoda’s campaign in 2013 of her launch. Little did I know that in year 3, I would be asked to be a subject and thought: “why not?”
I’ve admired her work and read about the transformative nature of being photographed underwater… and it did not disappoint. There is a peacefulness underwater and the levity of the buoyancy almost felt surreal.
Erena makes you feel comfortable and is incredibly patient with her subjects. We each come with anticipation, fears and expectations that she manages to put us at ease and be ourselves. I absolutely recommend to other survivors… especially to a young survivor. I wish this was available to me during my first cancer and it would have boosted my self-esteem tremendously.
