Chien-Chi Huang - Director of Asian Women for Health
Breast Cancer Survivor
Somerville, MA
My name is Chien-Chi Huang. I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in June, 2005 at age 40.
Although my loving family was very supportive, the disease made me feel isolated and alone during my cancer journey. I started the Asian Breast Cancer Project in 2010 to advocate for Asian women and help secure for them the same kind of care, information and support that every woman deserves.
When Erena contacted me for the underwater healer project, I felt an instant connection with her because I’m also fascinated with mermaids. I think that, in many ways, the fairy tale “Little Mermaid” embodies the immigrant experience (sacrificing one’s voice and the facility of movement that one feels in one’s native society in order to join a new one). It very much captures the emotions and feelings of the marginalized/minority population (including cancer patients/survivors).
I hope that by participating in this project, we can generate awareness that Asian women do get breast cancer, and that sharing our story, and being open in public about it, is both healing and empowering!
