Ready for Your Close Up?

If you’re thinking of booking an underwater portrait shoot, either for yourself or a loved one, you probably have many questions.  I’m here to answer them all!  With the holidays and end of the year rapidly approaching, an underwater portrait session not only makes a great gift, but is also perfect for those who make New Year’s resolutions.  Start the year 2016 by embarking on your own transformation and finding your renewed self.  And remember, your underwater portrait session allows me to continue my project photographing cancer survivors at no charge, so your own session will pay itself forward!

Now, to answer the most asked questions I receive.  Also, I encourage you to check out these testimonials and my perfect 5 star record on Yelp!

A: Where is the pool located?
Q: If you prefer using your own pool locally, I can travel to you as long as you are within the San Francisco Bay Area (my base). If you do not have a pool to use, no problem! There is an outdoor heated pool in San Jose or indoor heated pool in Pacifica, so please pick a location that is convenient for you. The pool’s schedule changes each season so when booking a session please send over your scheduling needs so we can arrange a time when they are open.

Q: What should I wear?
A: Please wear something you feel comfortable and happy in. If you are wearing a dress, it should be tighter on top with a longer, flow-y bottom. If you choose to wear a bathing suit (bikini or one piece) I have many fabrics in a variety of colors you may choose from to create floating, ethereal images.

Q: Can I bring props?
A: Please do not bring anything messy as the pools are rented and private. No inks, fish scales, small shells, sharp items etc. You may wear hair accessories, ribbons, necklaces, earrings, etc.

Q: Won’t my makeup run underwater?
A: I have oil based creams, waterproof mascara and eye liners for all who wish to wear makeup for their shoot. Please bring your own lipstick however.

Q: I’m not a good swimmer, can I really do this?
A: Yes, as long as you are comfortable in the water. You just need to breathe slow, deep and relax.  Do you have a fear of water? You are not the only one.  Two of my clients, Lindsey and Amy, wanted to overcome their fears by participating in an underwater shoot.  They challenged themselves and the result was beautiful. They are incredibly happy with their transformation and so am I! You can check out their stories here and here.

Q: Won’t I float away?  How do I sink like the models do?
A: It depends on your muscle mass and if the water is salt or fresh. If you are in salt water, you are more buoyant. Some models wear weights or tie their legs to objects (only with scuba regulator support from divers!). For fresh water shoots, you may use weights if you prefer and feel comfortable. If you do not, don’t worry.  The key to sinking without weights is to empty your lungs by breathing out while you are submerging yourself underwater.  You can do it!

Q: I’m feeling under the weather, will it negatively impact my session?
A: Please take care of yourself first. Even with just a little cold, you’ll have hard time in the water and it will lead to frustrations during the shoot.  Additionally, it’ll effect your sinuses and you’ll feel discomfort trying to submerge yourself. If you fall ill, please call me as soon as possible so we can reschedule and you can enjoy a healthy portrait session.
