Kanisha – Burn survivor

<< Please drag the arrows to see before & after underwater transformation >>

My name is Kanisha Anthony, 35 years old. I’m from St.Louis, MO. I am an author, Burn advocate, model and business owner.

At the age of four, my life changed forever when a house fire took my two brothers and left me with severe burns. I spent a year in the hospital and rehabilitation, enduring countless surgeries until I was 18. The fire took my fingers, my hair, and so much more. Doctors told me I would remain in a vegetative state for the rest of my life and that I wouldn’t be able to bear children.

Despite the immense physical and emotional pain, I found strength in my journey. I faced bullying and countless challenges, but I was determined to live a beautiful life. Today, I am married to the love of my life, who is also a burn survivor, and we have three beautiful children with another on the way.

What inspired you to be involved in the Underwater Transformation Project?

I was inspired by seeing Erena’s photos of other survivors on IG the photos were breathtaking.

What were your plans for the photo shoot?

My plans were to take the photos to remind myself of the survivor that I am as well as inside other to do the same.

How was the experience with an underwater portrait session?

I felt free. I loved how I was just able to flow in the water. There’s something about the water that is just peaceful. The most difficult part was holding my breath.

How was your mood after you finished?

My mood was good. I felt peaceful and relaxed. I felt accomplished for doing something that wasn’t necessarily comfortable for me and just allowing myself to be free.

What does WATER mean to you?

It’s like the constant flow of life no matter what conditions it goes through it continues to flow, it reminds me of the resilience that most of us have in life.

Do you think this experience could help overcome your trauma?

I think it can remind people that the trauma in your life doesn’t have to stop you for doing amazing things. I would definitely do one again.

How did you sleep the night of the photo shoot?

I slept without tossing that night.

How was Erena working with you?

Erena is amazing to work with! She not only captures the most beautiful pictures but she allows you to take control in the shoot while still being right there for support.

Would you recommend underwater transformation to other survivors or anyone?

Yes, I believe this is something people should experience at least once in their life.

What’s your dream? Any advice and awareness of the healing process, support group and protection?

My dream is to live a peaceful life no matter what and encourage others to do the same. My advise would be to always remember that healing is a journey it’s not a one day fix so it’s important to continue your healing.
